March 2019: The Firehouse - San Francisco, California

Recording sessions at The Firehouse in San Francisco, California, March 17-23, 2019

On March 19, I arrived in San Francisco early in the evening for a five-day stay. After checking into my hotel in the Castro District I plannned the next few days. It was a walk of almost 1.5 miles from the hotel to the Firehouse studio. And being San Francisco there was a big old hill in the middle. It was a beautiful walk with expansive views of the city. I made the round trip walk five times in the days I was there. The cool air was refreshing.

A typical day in the studio started about 9:30am and ended around 4 or 5 pm. On my first morning at the studio I ran into Bruce in a coffee shop (not Peet’s) and we walked a few blocks to the studio. There we met up with Colin Linden and Janice Powers. The setting was very homey. In fact, the recording was done in the living and dining area of what was once a private residence in more recent times. The sessions were relaxed, casual and personal.

There was a wide array of stringed acoustic instrumenrts, bells, percussion and miscellaneous music-makers filling the rooms. This was my fourth time in the studio with Bruce and I think I witnessed more creation-on-the-spot than I had seen before. It was pretty darned amazing. Good times.
