March 2019: The Firehouse - San Francisco, California

Recording sessions at the Firehouse in San Francisco, California, March 17-23, 2019

I arrived in San Francisco for a five-day stay on March 19 in the early evening. After checking into my hotel in the Castro District I palnned the next few days. It was a walk of almost 1.5 miles from the hotel to the Firehouse studio. And being San Francisco there was a bilg old hill in the middle. It was a beautiful walk with expansive views of the city. I made the round trip five times in the days I was there.

A typical day started about 10am and ended around 5 or 6 pm. On my first morning at the studio I ran into Bruce in a coffee shop (not Peet’s) and we walked a block to the studio. There we met up with Colin Linden and Janice Powers. The setting was very homey. In fact, the recording was done in the living and dining area of what was once a private residence in more recent times. For me, the session were relaxed, casual and personal.

There was a wide array of stringed acoustuc instrumenrts, bells, percussion and miscellaneous music-makers filling the rooms. This was my fourth time in the studio wirth Bruce and I thnk I witnessed more creation-on-the-spot than I had seen before. It was pretty darned amazing.
